Soaking up the snow

Our front entrance has little space for shoes, backpacks, coats and everything else that walks in with you. Right now what comes in is snow!

Original Wool Rug

Snow! All over the shoes, and boots even up their pant legs. I finally found that rug I was talking about, you know the wool one with an Indian design on it, maybe it's an Aztec design...I don't know. The rug is the rug I couldn't remember if I had kept or thrown out during our move. So...ta-da, found it!

And well it's pinkish or dusty mauve.

I use to love it. But not anymore. I wanted to use it if only it could be a darker color like navy or brown or even black.

We thought (Hubby and I) that we could dye it. I've tried to dye something before. Must have been eons ago, because I don't remember what the item was, but I do remember that it didn't turn out.

This rug is basically a simple woven rug. But after using 2 boxes of RIT Dye in Navy, it ended up looking like this:

Blotchy, Bluish only on the gray parts and bleaky. The horrible pinkish color is showing through. Looks like I didn't do anything to the pink. According to the directions, you use hot water (which I did), and soak it for 20 minutes, I choose 30 minutes because you are suppose to stir the item. My kitchen sink is a regular size stainless steel sink but the wool rug was a bit heavy to stir around in the sink. I figured if I'd added an extra 10 minutes to their recommendations it couldn't hurt.

Only because we needed a rug immediately at the front door, we have it placed and catching all snow when tracked in. But, I will be picking up 2 more boxes of RIT dye in navy to attempt coloring this rug again.
I'll let you know the results. Have you been successful at dyeing something? Any suggestions from you are greatly appreciated.

See Ya
Connie
